Places to Purchase Chocolate for Valentine's Day

2008/02/01
text by Amor and Liu Ruoxi, photos by Zhou Bin and Li Nan

Still buying Dove bars from supermarkets as Valentine’s Day gifts? Come on, this annual romantic festival deserves some delicately tailor-made sweets to deliver your love and passion towards the special someone. Follow BTM editors and check out where you can find choice treats in Beijing.

Awfully Chocolate

Well hidden to the north of Wanda Plaza, this small shop is simply decorated in white. With the owner living in Singapore for several years, chocolate cakes here are said to be Singapore-styled, with only three flavours: original, rum cherry and banana. The rum cherry variety is the most popular, while the banana-flavoured offering does not mix and match so well with chocolate. The appearance of cakes here is as simple as the shop, without patterns or decorations; but with a bite you will be deeply impressed by the strong and bittersweet chocolate inside. No seats provided, only take-away or delivery.

Oh! Marco

Sipping a glass of wine directly shipped from France, a taste of chocolate truffle, in a French-styled setting restaurant and lounge bar, this is one of the most romantic scenes I can imagine for a Valentine’s Day date. Chocolate truffles here include the flavours: original, hazel, nut and coffee. If you’re lucky, you can occasionally find sweets the owner has brought from France.

Chocolate Afternoon Tea, Ritz-Carlton, Beijing

An interesting combination of chocolate and Chinese tea: four pieces of specially flavoured chocolates and four cups of tea, representing “sour, sweet, bitter and salty,” the four stages of love, are placed in a crystal plate with a clock engraved in the middle. Taste the chocolate and tea with your beloved, and trace back the journey you two have come along.

Treats, Westin Beijing, Financial Street

Desserts, especially chocolate have always been something Westin take pride in, thanks to their pastry chef Kevin M.C. Who can resist the temptation of a chocolate wall made of pure chocolate, though it is safely protected? At least, you can take those heart-shaped or CD-shaped chocolates with you and surprise your girlfriend with their rich taste.

Cocoa Ballet

These treats are popular among expats: it must have something to do with their all-Swiss imported ingredients. The Cocoa Ballet now has a new service specially designed for the day, enabling valentines to print their photos on the chocolate for only 65 yuan a piece. What is more thrilling than eating up the other half’s image and swallowing their emotions with hand-made chocolate!

Gourmet Corner, China World Hotel

Sweets and treats for your honey abound at the Gourmet Corner for Valentine's Day as China World Hotel's award-winning executive pastry chef Manfred Oehler and his team have prepared a luscious selection of heart-shaped and "LOVE"-shaped strawberry cakes and chocolates. Recommended also is the 30-yuan package of four-flavour chocolates, including peach, pepper, osmanthus and almond flavours. An appointment three days in advance is required.

Valentino Chocolate lounge

From its name one instantly learns this place is born to be the perfect shopping destination for Valentine’s Day gifts. It’s always hard to choose from so many types of chocolate provided. The milk chocolate melts in your mouth the second you taste it, leaving a pleasant silky sensation; while chocolate with cream and nutty fillings are even harder to resist.
