Dance Season Begins2007/12/01
The Fifth Beijing International Dance Festival began on November 10 at the Tianqiao Theatre. As one of the three most important cultural festivals co-hosted by Ministry of Culture of China, and Beijing Municipal Government, the Dance Festival always attracts the top dance troupes from home and abroad. This year’s festival highlights performances given by world-famed dance troupes from Britain, the Americas and Spain, including Britain’s Northern Ballet Theatre (NBT). As with previous festivals, it also features dances from China's minority ethnic groups, such as Tibet and Inner Mongolia. The aim is to preserve national “cultural treasures,” which are regarded as an intangible cultural heritage of China. The opening performance was a Tibetan dance that won great applause. The following are performances to be held in December, with NBT’s Madame Butterfly as the closing ceremony of the festival. It is this ballet drama’s debut in China.
