2007 China Open

2007/07/31

The China Open, Asia's premier tennis tournament, is now four years old and getting better every year.

Beginning September 8, tennis fans in Beijing can watch the world’s best tennis players do what they do best. But the China Open has much more to offer than the games alone because of the festive atmosphere surrounding centre court that includes displays, exhibitions, interactive events, tennis clothing and gear.

In the tournament’s intimate environment, fans can get very close to players such as Justine Henin, Amelie Mauresmo, Martina Hingis, Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Fernando Gonzalez, Ivan Ljubicic, Marcos Baghdatis, Mario Ancic, Nikolay Davydenko and Tommy Robredo, all of whom have confirmed that they will compete in Beijing.

Good news also comes from WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) this year. At the end of March, Larry Scott, WTA's CEO said the China Open's women’s matches will be upgraded in status to one of the four A9 competitions in 2009. Also, Beijing will become the Asian headquarters for the WTA beginning in 2008.

Sponsors of the 2007 China Open include CCTV-5, Panasonic, Tsingtao Beer, Mercedes-Benz, Gatorade, Sony Ericsson, Kappa, Canon and Rolex.

The Kappa Tennis Cheering Squad Show, a cheerleader campaign for the China Open, has already started. As part of collaboration between the 57th Miss World competition and the China Open, the top three from the Cheerleading Show will be entered into the final Beijing round of the Miss World campaign.

The 2007 China Open theme song is also being selected. The contest received more than 1,300 songs from China and abroad, and more than a million people participated. By the end of the fifth round of online polling, 339 compositions were lined up in front of professional judges. Both the amateur and the professional judges have short-listed their respective top tens from the 339 songs, and the final result will come out soon.
