National Flower Debate Continues
2007/04/02
A spirited debate concerning which should be the national flower or flowers of China is expected to conclude at the annual meetings of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the National People’s Congress next spring.
Some have suggested the country should adopt the “one country, two flowers” approach, a proposal that has won the signature support of 102 academicians from Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering, according to Chen Junyu, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Chen said two national flowers are the best choice, one for North China and one for South China. The two flowers found most appealing to the people were the plum blossom and the peony. Each got 40 percent support.
With 102 academicians supporting the “one country, two flower” concept, including Chen, Yuan Longping, (a renowned Chinese agricultural scientist and educator) and Wu Liangyong (professor of architecture), it was the first time for so many academicians to address a single question in Chinese history.
