Chubby Sharks Must Lose Weight

How do you teach a shark or a fish to lose weight? Divers at Blue Zoo Beijing have the unenviable task of trying to do just that.

According to Blue Zoo Beijing specialists, because the zoo’s simulated marine environment is comfortable and the animals get sufficient food, large fish such as sharks are generally overweight, some of them by more than 150 kilograms.

The creature’s obesity threatens their health just as with human beings. Some sharks in zoos have perished because of fatty livers.

To protect the sea creatures, zoo experts are keeping records of fish growth and reviewing existing records on various fish species to help create an optimal environment for them at the zoo. Species in focus include sharks, rock cod, dragon fish, the chelonian and others. Height, width, length, abdominal circumference and respiration are among the measures being used to analyze records.
