National Museum Expansion Preparations Begin

Workers in December began moving 620,000 cultural items from the National Museum of China in Beijing in preparation for a 2.6 billion yuan (US$330 million) expansion project scheduled to begin next April. The museum will expand 100 metres eastward and its floor space will increase to 192,000 square metres when completed in 2010, making it the largest museum of its kind in the world. The museum’s special treasures display and Waxworks Hall are now closed, but other exhibitions will remain open until February 18, 2007. Temporary exhibitions will be used to satisfy the needs of visitors during the expansion period.
