The Sound of a Rainbow

2006/11/30

What is the sound of rainbow like? One may find this question rather bizarre, or even respond by asking: How can the colour of a rainbow make sounds at all?

But, here, “rainbow” refers not to what actually appears in a blue sky after a rain shower, but to “Rainbow Melody,” an art and culture corporation that emphasizes creating and producing high-quality music and providing musical performances for various occasions.

Most of the staff of the Beijing Rainbow Melody Art and Culture Limited Corporation are current students or graduates of the Central Conservatory of Music. Their goal is to “put what we’ve learned at school into practice, and create more and nicer music for the world,” according to A Wei, the founder of the corporation.

Founded at the beginning of 2003, Rainbow Melody found its challenge in creating, editing and producing high-quality music. At the end of 2003, the corporation added performance services and formed several qualified performing groups, which gained great popularity and recognition in the society within a short time. In only four years, Rainbow Melody has produced more than 2,000 pieces of original music, including music and theme songs for more than 80 movies and TV plays.

The corporation has also presented more than 5,000 performances, including performances at banquets during the Ohio State University’s visit in China. The professional performances they provide include solo (piano, violin, erhu, dizi), ensemble (string quarter, band ensemble, folk music ensemble), concertos (two-piano concertos, piano-violin concertos and band concertos) and combinations (combinations of folk music and string, combinations of keyboards and other instruments, combinations of strings and horns). The also combine modern and classical, Latin and jazz styles in their performances if desired.

The performers of Rainbow Melody are still from the Central Conservatory of Music, which ensures their performance levels and personal grace on the stage. Outstanding both in appearance and musical achievements, performers have won national and international music awards, and have performed in prestigious venues, including the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Wigmore Hall in London.

Rainbow Melody also produces music for video games, computer games and online games. In 2006, Zhang Axiang, a senior producer of the corporation, wrote and produced music for popular online game Fantasy Journey CJ, which was also performed by Rainbow Melody. The work has been lauded as “outstanding online game music rarely heard in China” by online-game professionals.

So the original question is answered: The sound of Rainbow, is just like the rainbow itself. It’s colourful! It’s breath-taking! And it’s brilliant!
