Cutie Club, a Date with Beauty

2006/04/01
text by Amor

With lots of clubs restaurants and tiny garrets scattered everywhere in Beijing, arranging a date with beauty remains no easy thing.

What is beauty? It is a holistic feeling stretching from the interior to the exterior, a perfect unison of details and layout and passion combined with quietness and enthusiasm. According to this standard, the Cutie Club may measure up to your high standards for beauty in real life in a nightclub.

With its Chinese name, translated as "club for beauties, Cutie Club strives to stand out among the clubs at Gongti Ximen using its feminine name and by working hard to attract women patrons, who might be tempted by the club's impressive range of drinks and snacks or even the bartenders' showmanship.

However, it's the club's layout and decoration that is really tempting, with lights flashing all colours of the rainbow, brash 1980s-inspired decor complete with smoked glass panelling, neon lighting, couches upstairs and a balcony view of what's happening down below. Though without a big dance floor, the clientele seem to have little problem getting into a fun dance mood between the tables and along the balcony, energized by a good mix of electronic, hip-hop and reggae sounds.

Plush leather sofas are a great place to rest weary legs, while the velvety lounge upstairs is a good place to drink, chat and do some people watching, especially if you're a cutie or looking for one.

Its party rooms are a beautiful highlight of the Cutie Club. Classical Chinese-style engraved walls go perfectly with the modern, western-style crystal lamp stands. Cloth sofas and crystal wine tables provide the sensation of a star hotel or home sweet home. Music might be the only thing people complain about here, because it's rare to hear the most recent music.

However, the manager of Cutie Club, Andy Yan, also has his own complaints: "We, from the managing board to the DJs, do hope to play newer and fashionable music more. But many of our clientele still prefer older popular music like Mr. Lonely or Gold-digger. We have to meet their demands. We have to be practical."

He is probably right. The same complaints can be heard at other nightclubs here in Beijing. Nevertheless, with its first-class décor and atmosphere, music is really not that important an influence on your beautiful mood.

This is especially true when you venture into the Cutie Club's restaurant next to the club after you've exhausted yourself on the dance floor. The restaurant can serve up to 200 customers with more than 200 Taiwan-styled dishes or other delicious fare from Southeast Asia, Shanghai and Sichuan.

With a fragrant coffee in hand and with lilting music, you'll have deeper understanding of what beauty really means. Then you'll agree with me Cutie Club is the place to have a date with beauty.
