Morel's Gongti branch has a long reputation as the best Western restaurant in Beijing. Beijing This Month (BTM) often hears comments such as "the only place in Beijing to savour authentic mussels" or "no visiting Belgian official dares to skip the place" or "all top beers from Europe" from customers of Morel's.

All this and more was verified when BTM recently visited its landmark Beijing branch. Morel's is a fine restaurant, with a rare, almost fanatical devotion to quality.

Morel's is owned by Renaat Morel of Belgium-one of China's most respected European chefs and one who is regarded as one of the top 60 chefs in the world. He heads the Beijing association of expatriate chefs and has worked for a Michelin three-star restaurant in Europe. He operates the restaurant with the help of his energetic and outgoing wife Susan. They have created a restaurant with a casual and cosy feel that offers delicious French and Belgian foods of unequalled quality and grace. Its pursuit of high quality is evident in common details many diners often neglect, for example, in the restaurant's choice of knives. The knives diners use are imported from Europe and have remained sharp since Morel's first opened. Their chefs' knives generally cost thousands of euros, which ensures that the taste and presentation Morel's food will not be equalled.

European drinkers will surely be ecstatic with Morel's astounding array of Belgian beers, such as Duvel, Hoegaarden, Kwak, Chimay, Orval and Maredsous, but BTM suggests you try the Morels'-branded beer. Is there any better alcoholic company for a chef's perfect works than his own creation?
