Women Prisoners May Celebrate New Year with Husbands

Twelve prisoners at Beijing Women's Prison are being allowed to celebrate the traditional Chinese New Year with their husbands in specially prepared private rooms, prison officials said.

This is a first for the prison. Twenty-four-hour visits will be allowed. During the Spring Festival, 12 women stayed with their husbands for 24 hours in standard guestrooms provided by the prison authorities.

The prison has set up a two-storey building for the inmates' family reunions. It has 12 standard guest rooms with separate bathrooms, double beds and other necessary facilities for the special day.

The prison will also provide free New Year's dinner banquets for all women prisoners during which they can meet family members.
