Psychological Evaluation System in Place for Students

2005/01/01

China's first psychological evaluation system for primary and middle school students is expected to better monitor and prevent psychological problems of Chinese youngsters.
Professor Zheng Richang, head of the research team with Beijing Normal University, said the evaluation system is composed of 29 chapters with more than 1,800 test questions. A pilot evaluation was conducted among 20,000 students in 91 primary and middle schools.
In recent years, the State Council has issued a series of documents, calling on families, schools and social organizations to improve the mental health of China's youth.
Some Chinese universities and colleges have set up psychological evaluations for newcomers and some primary schools have launched psychological consulting services. However, based on Guo's observations, administrations and schools at local levels have not given enough attention to this issue yet.
Nation to Provide Free Schooling for Western Regions
China will provide free, nine-year compulsory educations in its poverty-stricken western regions next year and will continue to increase educational investments in those areas, a senior official said.
Jiang Peimin, director of the Elementary Education Department of the Ministry of Education, said that China will invest more than 100 billion yuan (US$12.4 billion) in elementary education during the next five years.
Jiang made the statement at a meeting of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference on compulsory education in poor areas in western China. Officials say the disparity between the affluent East and impoverished West is growing.
China aims to provide free, nine-year compulsory education in rural areas in 2010 and for all students nationwide by 2015, said a recent report released by the ministry.
