Beijing in My Eyes

2006/01/01

A placid hutong, a parade on Chaoyangmenwai Dajie with performers from different countries, sportsmen on the Great Wall and an energetic dance by the official mascots of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games and more were subjects of winning photographs in the first "Beijing-An Olympic City in View" Photo Contest, which was held between May and November 2005.

Sponsored by the Beijing Tourism Administration and organized by Beijing This Month Publications, it was the city's first photo contest on the theme of "Beijing and Olympics" with participants from around the globe.

Judges from the tourism administration and expert photographers selected Claro Cortes IV of Reuters as the Grand Prize winner. They also selected two First, five Second and eight Third prize winners. Ten Certificates of Excellence were also awarded.

This photo contest sought to portray the enthusiasm of Beijingers in their preparations for the Beijing Games and to reflect foreign tourists' understanding of and emotions for the city. With such themes, the contest attracted more than 3,000 contestants who submitted 9,896 photographs for consideration.

The contest's participants were from many parts of the world, including Sweden, the United States, Australia, Malaysia, Turkey, Switzerland, Great Britain, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Germany, France and Hong Kong.
