EU Chamber of Commerce Held Annual Charity Gala

2005/12/01

The European Union Chamber of Commerce held its Fifth Annual Gala Dinner in Aid of Orphans in China on November 3. The ''Touch an Orphan's Life'' Gala Dinner was organized in conjunction with the China Charity Federation, Operation Blessing China, and World Vision China. The gala raised 1 million yuan (US$125,000), which will be used to provide support to orphans in China, including providing life-changing surgery, better care and improving the living conditions of orphans, especially those with special needs.

''The European Chamber is very proud to host the gala dinner this year,'' European Chamber President Serge Janssens de Varebeke said. ''In the past five years, this event was hosted by the EU-China Managers Association and they have done a tremendous job of raising significant sums of money and changing the lives of many orphans in China. The European Chamber is strongly committed to making this an even bigger and better event and to raising more money to help those who are most disadvantaged in today's society.''

One highlight of this year's event is that, for the first time ever, it has attracted the support of a major Chinese sponsor. Qingdao-based Saint Milk Powder Company joined Nokia in becoming the second Platinum sponsor.  According to the European Chamber, Saint donated an equivalent of 500,000 yuan (US$62,500) in both financial and in-kind support to the ''Touch an Orphan's Life'' initiative. Saint is the first domestic Chinese company to join the ranks of many other multinational corporations who have provided assistance through this successful programme in support of handicapped orphans.
