Affordable, Accessible and Authentically Italian2005/12/01
By Charles J. Dukes There was a time when high-quality western-style food in Beijing was extremely difficult to find, very expensive and mostly limited to "star" hotels. Wine lists were spare. And when it came to real Italian food, well…it was best to make friends with a real Italian who knew how to use locally available ingredients to work miracles. But, happily, those days are at an end, because of restaurateurs such as Chen Huanren, the founder of the ADRIA restaurant chain in Beijing. ADRIA recently opened its New ADRIA II restaurant in the Central Park complex off Chaowai Dajie in Beijing's Chaoyang District, one of six ADRIA outlets in Beijing. Two recent trips to the restaurant revealed that the most discriminating palate can be satisfied, whether sampling ADRIA's buffet-featuring everything from lasagna to smoked salmon, various meats, delicious desserts and fruit-or ordering ala carte. During an unexpected opportunity to dine with Chen at ADRIA II, he ordered Venetian chef Nicola's mozzarella de bufalo for starters (locally made water buffalo cheese layered with tomatoes with mint), chicken ravioli and carrots anointed with ADRIA's imported olive oil, a tender filet mignon dressed with black peppercorns and a mushroom sauce. A Torres Coronas Tempranillo red wine (2002) was a perfect complement to a meal topped off with tiramisu that brought the whole meal together and to an end. ADRIA is accessible, affordable and authentically Italian. Best of all, there's one near you.
