Gifts for the Needy

2005/12/01
Text by Winnie Li and Joy Chen

Giving has become a passionate part of nearly all the world's mid-winter holiday traditions, such as during Christmas, Hanukkah, Boxing Day or Kwanzaa in the West or during the Spring Festival in China, with its hongbao(red envelopes for children)and the extra attention paid to the elderly and young, not unlike in the West. Various means, such as charity balls held by the more fortunate, are used to raise money to help support charitable activities. Here we provide basic information about some of China's most influential charity organizations.

People Infected with AIDS Need Aid

Begun in 1988, World AIDS Day is about more than just about raising money;it is also about increasing awareness, education and fighting prejudice.

l        ''Stop AIDS; Keep the Promise'' is the theme for World AIDS Day 2005.

l        The Red Ribbon Home established in 1991 at Beijing Ditan Hospital, is one of China’s leading HIV/AIDS research and treatment institutions, with an aim of offering physical and psychological support to people with HIV/AIDS and their families. The Red Ribbon Home is now in need of mature psychological volunteers, and their biggest problem is a lack of funds.

l        Actor Pu Cunxi, actress Jiang Wenli and CCTV anchor Bai Yansong have been the ambassadors for preventing AIDS in China.
