Runners Invited to Try National Holiday Mountain Race2005/10/01
Text by Jin Yan The villages and mountainous area of southwestern Beijing suburb Mentougou District will witness the 2005 Beijing International Mountain Foot Race on October 2 and 3. More than 2,000 people will assemble to compete or provide relevant services to runners. The race date has been set during the holidays to attract more outdoor sports fans and tourists to participate in the event. There will also be light entertainment performances to make the 100-kilometre event more enjoyable and beneficial to local people. The Beijing International Mountain Foot Race began last year, with the youngest runner 6 years old and the oldest 70. Wan Jinqing, director of the Beijing Mountaineering Association, now wants to make it an annual event. The champion of the 2004 Beijing International Mountain Foot Race finished the whole route in eight hours, 49 minutes and 38 seconds, much shorter than the time limit. The length of a typical woman's stride is 0.8-1 metre long and 1-1.2 metres for a man. At a typical pace of 1.5 steps a second, a woman can walk 4.32-5.4 kilometres an hour, while a man can cover 5.4-6.48 kilometres. Thus, obviously depending on local conditions and a person's height and fitness, a woman can walk 100 kilometres within 19-23 hours and a man 16-19 hours.
