Replicas of Art Treasures from the Palace Museum on Show

2005/09/01

China's treasured ancient calligraphy and painting works were rarely seen by common eyes, because they are hard to preserve and are often stored in well-conditioned museums. Recent development in high-tech reproduction techniques offers a chance to view high-quality replicas of these historic masterpieces.

Generally speaking, silk works can be preserved for 800 years and paper works 1,000 years, but it is necessary to study and exhibit these works in order to promote traditional culture. To solve this problem, the Palace Museum in collaboration with Beijing Royal Heritage Company, Limited, gathered scholars and experts in different fields, such as relics, papermaking, textiles and printing to experiment with high-technology replication methods.

This joint effort achieved great success. The first results are replicas of the most valuable works of renowned artists of the Sui to the late-Qing dynasties held at the Palace Museum. Only 100 replica pieces will be created for each artwork and these will mainly be made for research and collection purposes.

These replicas were exhibited in the Xinfucun Art Centre from July 26 to 30, sponsored by the Royal Heritage & Rainbow Art Printing Centre, the Beijing Royal Heritage Company, Limited and by Beijing Wu Fang Cheng Culture Art Incorporated.
