Together, Let's Build the Public Education Library with Love

Support of the Public Education Library building project was the object of a fund-raising event held August 2 in the Heritage Room of Ascott Beijing.

About 11,723 yuan in donations for the library was raised during the event, which was sponsored by Beijing This Month Publications, Ascott International Management (Beijing), Radio 774 and the Chinese Literature Fund.

Initiated in May 2004 by Ji Xianlin and 55 other famous Chinese writers, the Education Library Project’s goal is to help poor and disadvantaged children in West China.

Renowned writer Liu Zhenyun and about 120 other celebrities, entrepreneurs and other well-known personages from various fields participated and contributed to the fund-raising effort. School children, including some of those who will benefit from the charity effort, assisted deaf children who participated in the activity and gave wonderful performances.

Andy McEwen, co-author of the New Long March with Ed Jocelyn, a thrilling book about a modern search for Chinese history, attended the party and autographed their work. All the money and contributions raised were given to the Education Library Fund.

It is said that a good book cultivates the soul of a person and paves the way to success. For children in poverty-stricken areas, spiritual assistance is as important as material support. The sponsors expected that this charity activity would help expand the influence of the Education Library Project and give the children a brighter future.

During the past year, the Education Library Project has established 138 “library rooms” for children in underdeveloped areas and has provided 220,000 books of all kinds and 378 computers to the libraries.

This charitable, non-governmental effort has won the support of many officials, including Premier Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Liu Yunshan, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the CPC, and others. A growing number of people are getting involved.
