Hungarian Cultural Week Hits Beijing

2005/09/01
Text by Hellen Zhou

The first Hungarian Cultural Week will be held in Beijing this month showcasing the European country's puppetry, music, paintings and movies.

Chinese are familiar with Franz Liszt, Sandor Petofi and Elisabeth of Bavaria (or Sissi). This event will introduce new artistic stars to the Beijing audience, including the Hungarian National Folk Dance Troupe, Romano Drom, Gabor Rosko, Agnes Eperjesi and Imre Bukta.

Romano Drom, which in Romany means "gypsy road," will lead audiences in the musical tradition of the mobile Olah Gypsies from Walachia, traditionally horse traders and travellers. Gabor Rosko, Agnes Eperjesi and Imre Bukta are Hungary's most reputable modern painters.

In October 1989, the first Chinese Culture Week was held in Hungary in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. This event greatly enhanced the exchanges between the two countries in areas of culture, education and sports from 1990 to 1995, and it is hoped the same will occur this time.

Schedule:

September 8: Opening Ceremony, puppet show and folk dance performance at Tianqiao Theatre

September 9: Art exhibition at the China Millennium Monument

September 9-12: Film shows at New Century Theatre, Wangfujing

September 10: Concert at The Concert Hall of the Central Nationality Troupe
