A Taste of Italy2005/07/01
Text by Hellen Zhou, photos by Qin Gang and courtesy of Italian Trade Commission The Italian home of Romeo and Juliet, the inspiration for Roman Holiday, was brought to Beijingers in the form of the Italy in Chaoyang Park 2005 cultural show at Chaoyang Park from May 29 - June 2. The five-day event was organised by the Italian Trade Commission and was sponsored by the China Association of Fashion Designers to celebrate the 750th birthday of Marco Polo, an Italian merchant who travelled in China during the thirteenth century and returned to tell the tale, one of the greatest travelogues of all time. With the slogan Italy Made, every presentation was designed to give guests a taste of the essence of Italy. The organizers even built a temporary Rialto Bridge and three gondolas were flown from Venice, along with professional boatmen. Along with wine tasting, lectures on Italian furniture and shoe manufacturing, sports exhibitions, fashion shows, movie screenings and a gondola tour, guests also enjoyed gourmet foods served by top-ranked Italian chefs. The fashion shows attracted much of the public's attention, as expected, and many Italian brands, such as Valentino, Fendi, Givenchy, Kenzo, Calvin Kline and Missoni were shown. Some of the fashions displayed are shown below:
