Ph.Ds Queue For High School Teaching Jobs2005/03/30
This is the job-hunting season for college graduates, and by the same tokens also the time of year for high schools to recruit new teachers. Several such schools in Beijing have seen doctoral graduates lining up for teaching positions. These Ph.Ds, along with post-graduate holders of Master's degrees, are seeking the same jobs. Such competition enables school administrators to be unusually selective in whom they employ. One high school has so far received 105 resumes from candidates with doctoral degrees, and more than 3,000 resumes from post-graduate Master's degree holders. Some employment analysts point out that Ph.Ds' choice of a high school teaching career had much to do with the improved pay and benefits package for teachers now available, the relatively stable working environment, and society's greater recognition of the educational sector. On the other hand, as more and more people from previously expanded enrollment graduate from universities, competition in the job market has become fiercer. And the relative saturation of positions for Ph.Ds in college education has also contributed to these highly trained graduates seeking high school teaching jobs.
