Make the Play Work

2005/03/30

On March 9, Beijing People's Art Theatre invited Asari Keita, General Art Director of Fukuoka City Theater, to give a lecture on "Fukuoka City Theater's Successful Experiences and the Development of Music Drama".

During the two-hour lecture, Asari Keita talked cheerfully and humorously. He said musical drama is pleasing and elegant entertainment, where actors and actresses need to be versatile in ballet, jazz, and rock 'n' roll.

Keita also spoke of the successes in dramatic creation, playing and marketing. He said the success of a good drama lies in both the actors' performance and a good marketing plan. "Chinese actors are excellent, but there are few good companies that can manage them. In China, few people manage a theatre as a company. This is a big problem that influences the development of stage performance."

Referring to the ticket-sale system, he admitted to great dissatisfaction. "Five years from now, when the ticket-booking system develops, you will find that the 20 percent booking commission is ridiculous" He strongly suggested introduction of a network booking system which would make tickets easier to obtain. He emphasized that low ticket prices can greatly increase box-office revenue.
