Revel in Pinggu’s Peach Blossoms

One of Beijing's less well-known claims to fame is that Pinggu, an area located northeast of the capital city, is the home of the world's largest peach orchard. The orchard contains about 20,000 hectares of trees that bear the crisp, sweet fruit, but the area also produces strawberries, plums, apricots and pears. The orchard's stature is confirmed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

This year's Peach Blossom Festival in Pinggu will be held April 15-25. It's an event sure to draw a huge number of camera-toting visitors, many of whom regard contact with peach blossom as lucky. Visitors may either tour the orchard and its many greenhouses on foot, view the vast sea of pink blossom from special platforms or get a true bird's-eye view of Pinggu from an aircraft based at the nearby Jingdong Water-eroded Cave.

Pinggu has been a county for about 2,200 years, but its Peach Blossom Festival was first held in 1999. During April, even as the peach blossoms bloom and fall, visitors can sill pick and sample peaches grown in greenhouses or sample other fruit grown in the orchard. Many visitors spend a few days at one of the 57 tourist villages in the area, not least to enjoy the barbecues, potherb and maize porridge that are the specialties of local people.

In addition, tourists can also visit the Jingdong Water-eroded Cave and Jinhai Lake. From April 1 to May 31 the Jinhai Lake Windmill and Wind-bell Exhibition are staged. On view will be models of 48 windmills from Europe, Africa, Australia, America and China, plus 180 groups of wind-bells.
