“Word Bricks” on Great Wall to Be Shown in Hebei
2005/03/01
Sixteen “Word bricks” on the Great Wall are to go on display at the eastern end of the wall in north China’s Hebei Province, according to Xinhuanet.
The bricks, inscribed with Chinese characters about the wall’s construction time and military establishment, will be displayed at the newly-renovated Great Wall Museum in Shanhaiguan Pass, just north of Beijing.
“Construction workers sculpted the wall with characters to record project programs and distinguish sections,” said Dong Yaohui, deputy president of the China Great Wall Society.
The bricks, about 40 by 20 by 10 centimetres, were found in Great Wall sections both in Beijing and Hebei, with most around the Shanhaiguan Pass.
The work shown in the exhibit mostly dates back to Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), but some go back as far as the Northern Qi Dynasty (AD550-577), Dong said.
