798 Needs Better Tomorrow

2005/03/01

Scholars in Beijing have submitted a petition hoping the government can help protect the 798 Art Factory in the city's Chaoyang District.

The art factory, also known as Dashanzi Art District, is a base for many contemporary art workshops, art galleries and bars. However, rumours say a real estate developer from Hong Kong intends to buy the land and turn it into a housing development.

Experts say 798 Art Factory is a treasure, with precious loft-style workshops and contemporary artworks, and thus should be protected instead of being destroyed by urban sprawl.

The 798 Art Factory has a thriving artistic community and the 50-year-old military factory buildings are of a unique architectural style.
