Multiplexes Move In

2005/03/01
Text by Daragh Moller

As Chinese cinema celebrates its centenary, Beijing’s cinema scene has never been more vibrant. Film clubs and modern cinemas have sprung up all around the city in recent times, making moviegoing an increasingly attractive entertainment option.

Established venues like the Dahua, Zhong and Dongchuang cinemas have been refurbished, while more recently modern multiplexes have appeared in the shape of Star City Cinema, Sun Dong An Cinema and UME Huaxing International Cinema. These mainly serve a diet of Hollywood and Hong Kong blockbusters, with the former shown in original English-language versions at certain screenings.

Independent film clubs are also flourishing. The best known among the expat community is the long-running Cherry Lane Movies, which shows Mainland productions subtitled in English.
