Teatime in a “Palace”

2005/03/01
text by Winnie Li

The new Pavilion in March teahouse is reminiscent of the famous Long Corridor in the Summer Palace, its ceilings covered in exquisite Chinese traditional paintings. The lifelike depictions of flowers, birds and stories from folktales and novels were all painted by experts who specialize in the restoration of the Summer Palace's century-old art. The teahouse's wooden furniture also follows typical traditional Chinese styles and patterns, and together with palace lanterns hanging in the middle of the ceiling and a display of various teapots combine to create a sense of tranquillity and elegance.

The teahouse serves authentic Chinese teas from all over the country, as well as a selection of dumplings and other snacks. Nine separate tea rooms surround a courtyard where dozens of goldfish swim lazily. Downstairs, foot and body massage services are also available.
