Text by Daragh Moller Beijing Art Now Gallery (BANG) 北 京 现 在 画 廊 Now on show: Yang Jinsong Solo Exhibition (March 2-14) Beijing Art Now Gallery (BANG) is situated in the heart of the Beijing Workers’ Stadium, one of the city’s commercial and cultural centres. It overlooks a small bridge on a lake surrounded by drooping willows. The exhibition space covers 230 square meters. On September 15, 2004, Yang Shaobin, a luminary among Chinese contemporary artists, held a solo exhibition titled “Post 9/11.” This event generated enthusiastic support for Beijing Art Now Gallery. Beijing Art Now Gallery deals in Chinese avant-garde art. It encourages artists “to become a part of world art history,” while also “keeping Chinese contemporary art in China.” On November 3, 2004, the exhibition “Stone Face - The First Group Print Exhibition of China Art Now” opened at Beijing Art Now Gallery. Currently, Beijing Art Now Gallery artists include Yang Shaobin, He Sen, Song Yonghong, Yang Jinsong, Gao Huijun, Kong Weimeng, Ren Xiaolin, Jiang Congyi, and Cui Xiuwen. Representing a dynamic collection of cutting-edge artists from the Chinese mainland. Chinese Contemporary Beijing is located in Factory 798, Beijing's most active art enclave. A series of deserted factory spaces designed and built in cooperation with the East Germans in Bauhaus style, Factory 798 is the place for contemporary culture as more artists and galleries establish studios and exhibition spaces there. Chinese Contemporary Beijing's space is located in the centre of Factory 798. It covers 300 square metres on two levels with 10-metre ceilings incorporating exhibition space and stock room. The gallery publishes numerous catalogues which are also available. Chinese Contemporary Beijing favours group exhibitions, showing four or five a year, and gives preference to contemporary Chinese creation. The Beijing space will also be introducing artists from other countries. Artists include Fang Lijun, Guo Jin, Guo Wei, Liu Ye, Ma Liuming, Shi Guorui, Wang Guangyi, Zhao Bo, Zhang Dali, Zhu Ming. Chinese Contemporary is run by Jenny Wong. Born in Singapore and brought up in Europe, Jenny is multilingual, a knowledgeable contemporary Chinese art devotee and an active member of the Factory 798 community. Opened in 1996, the CourtYard is located directly across from the East Gate of the Forbidden City in a traditional courtyard house, originally part of the imperial palace. Chinese art has undergone a radical change in terms of both content and form in recent years. The determined search of young Chinese artists has led to diversification in all fields of art. The gallery artists include Chen Wenbo, Liu Wei, Yang Yong, Zhu Jia, Liu Zheng and Wang Qingsong. The gallery is managed by Meg Maggio, a resident in China since 1986. The Creation Art Gallery was established in 1996 by artist Li Xiaoke, son of Chinese master painter Li Keran. The Creation Gallery focuses on presenting diversified contemporary art, and discovering unknown but talented artists. The Creation Gallery has the largest collotype workshop in China. Collotype is a technique of reproducing rare original master paintings. Benoit Coze is artistic director of Imagine. Imagine Gallery creates opportunities for international artists to exchange artistic experiences by coming to Beijing. These opportunities include exhibitions, residency programs, workshops, meetings and cultural collaborations. Situated on the north-east side of Beijing (15 minutes from downtown, 15 minutes from Beijing Capital Airport), Imagine is near a small village and in ideal proximity to other lively Beijing art communities, including galleries, art academies and cafes in the area The gallery space in Feijiacun has a permanent art collection show room, a VIP space, a theatre-cafe where 3 Oranges Theatre Productions are performed, and the Imagine Gallery Artists Studios. The space has 9-meter high ceilings. Located in Dashanzi Art District (in the original 798 Factory), the 798 Space was designed by East German architects in the Bauhaus style in the early 1950s.
