China to Send 5,000 Young Teachers Abroad Annually

Beginning in 2005, the Chinese Government will send 5,000
young college teachers abroad each year to study for doctor's
degrees or to undertake academic research in top foreign
universities, according to Xinhuanet.
Minister of Education Zhou Ji, at a ceremony held in Wuhan,
said this will be the largest project of its kind ever
undertaken by the government.
The project, set up by the China Scholarship Council, plans
to select academic leaders, promising scholars and outstanding
young and middle-aged teachers to study abroad.
About 50 universities are participating in the programme; 28
universities, including the prestigious Peking University,
Tsinghua University and Nankai University were first to sign up
to participate. Other institutions are expected to join the
programme by the end of January.
