Lunar New Year Becomes New York State Public Holiday

2004/12/01

New York State has passed a bill recognizing the Lunar New Year as a public holiday, China Radio International reported on November 10.

This was said to be in recognition of the great contributions to the region made by Asian immigrants. The Lunar New Year is a traditional holiday in China, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan and other parts of Asia.

Of New York State's 18 million residents, 28 percent are of Asian descent.
