Letter from the Editor of Beijing This Month, Sept 20042004/09/01
At the end of the summer, the Olympic Games 2004 in Athens once again captured the world's imagination. While the athletes were testing themselves on the track, in the field, the swimming pool, the gymnasium and on the courts, we pulled "double duty" in Beijing because of the five-hour time difference between Beijing and Athens. When Mayor Wang Qishan accepted the Olympic flag during the closing ceremonies in Athens, the wee hours of August 30 here at home, Beijing's history turned a new leaf, with the exclamation: Let's meet in Beijing in 2008! In this issue, whether directly or indirectly, we focus on how Beijing is and how it is preparing its new destiny. Join us in considering Beijing's ambitious architectural plans for Old Beijing (Lao Beijing), the glitzy go-getting city of the present and consider what's in store for its tantalizing future. Enjoy with us two pieces about the past, Beijing's ancient city layout and a legendary family of architects and a piece about the present and future featuring Zhang Xin of SOHO China. There are also stories about the special Beijing Dadu Ruins Park and mountain biking activities available in the city. September means the start of Beijing's second art season. Overseas troupes and artists will visit from the end of September to middle of November. The period around China's National Day will also see several large-scale activities, such as the tourism festival and fashion week. We also look forward to the China Open professional tennis tournament and the F1 Grand Prix in Shanghai. Believe it or not, the end of Athens 2004 only raised the curtain on Beijing's fabulous autumn scene. Congratulations to BTM editor Shannon Roy, who will get married in this golden season. Good luck, Shannon! |
