The Trocks Rolls onto the Beijing Stage

2004/09/01
Text by Hellen Zhou

Les Ballet Trockadero De Monte Carlo first performed in after-hours shows in lofts and small theatres far from the bright lights of Broadway. Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts for the purpose of presenting a playful, entertaining view of traditional, classical ballet in parody form and en travesti, The Trocks, as this sensational all-male comic ballet company are affectionately known, quickly got national and international exposure with their unique blend of dance and comedy. They proved that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces.

The Trocks have since established themselves as a major dance phenomenon throughout the world. They have travelled to over 400 cities, and have met with both popular and critical success.

The concept of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has not changed since its inception. It is a company of professional male dancers performing a large repertoire of ballet and modern dance, including classical and original works, incorporating faithful renditions of both the manner and conceits of those dance styles. The comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents, and underlying incongruities of serious dance. The fact that men dance all the parts - heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, sylphs, water sprites, romantic princesses, angst-ridden Victorian ladies - enhances rather than mocks the spirit of dance as an art form, delighting and amusing the most knowledgeable, as well as the novices, in the audience.

The 30th anniversary of the Trocks during the 2004-05 season builds on the success of the past. Extended engagements include a weeklong season in Paris, performances in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Britain, and tours across the United States and the Far East, including China, Japan and Singapore.
