2004 Terry Fox Run2004/09/01
The Canadian Embassy announced that the 2004 Beijing Terry Fox Run will take place at 9 a.m. on September 25 in Chaoyang Park. Terry Fox is a national hero in Canada. In 1977, while still at university he was diagnosed with bone cancer and his right leg had to be amputated. While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other patients that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. In 1980, he started running across the country on an artificial leg and his incredible journey became known as the "Marathon of Hope." Although he was forced to abandon his run half way, because his cancer returned, Terry had already become a source of inspiration to millions of people. Following his death in 1981, volunteers began holding runs all over the world to commemorate Terry Fox's courage and to raise funds for cancer research. The first Terry Fox Run was held in Beijing in 1999 and funds raised have amounted to over 2 million yuan (US$240,000), all used for ongoing cancer research in China. Last year, in Beijing, 800,000 yuan (US$97,000) was raised for cancer research and Beijing was placed third in the world for the number of run participants internationally. The Terry Fox Run is no longer just a Canadian event, but a day for people around the world to work together to help rid the world of this terrible disease. The run will begin at the west side of Lihua Square in Chaoyang Park and will end at the east side of Lihua Square, a distance of approximately 7.2 kilometres. Everyone is invited to run, walk, or use a wheelchair. All funds raised by the Terry Fox Run in Beijing will be used by the Chinese Cancer Institute for cancer research.
