Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre2004/09/01
Text by Hellen Zhou Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre (AAADT) was born from a now-fabled performance that took place on March 30, 1958, in which Alvin Ailey and a group of young, black, modern dancers performed in New York City. Alvin Ailey's American dance company has since made a broad, indelible impact on the way people view dance, the African-American aesthetic and music in America. A living time capsule, Ailey's company and its repertory mirrored America and its changes, growing from a small mostly-black company to a large multi-racial dance company, fulfilling his dream to touch everyone's heart through dance. AAADT honours Ailey's vision of creating a company dedicated to the preservation of unique black cultural expression and the enrichment of the American modern dance heritage. Judith Jamison continues the legacy performance as a medium for honouring the past, celebrating the present and fearlessly reaching into the future.
