Walls of Yuanmingyuan Ruins Restored

2004/08/01

Beijing is about to complete its restoration work on the walls at the Yuanmingyuan Ruins. Yuanmingyuan, was known as the most splendid imperial garden in the world before it was burned in the 1860 by Anglo-French troops. The walls were about 17,000 metres long.

The Beijing municipal government has poured more than 400 million yuan (US$48 million) into the project over the past 24 years. Recent projects once encountered setbacks because of residents who refused to move out of the park. Since the occupation of cultural relics in the capital has been a serious matter, a draft regulation on the protection of China's cultural relics was recently created. People evacuating the park are expected to be compensated under provisions of the new regulations.
