89th Universal Esperanto Congress Opens in Beijing
2004/08/01
Esperanto, perhaps the world's most widely spoken "invented
language," was celebrated at the 89th Universal
Esperanto Congress, which opened in Beijing on July 25.
About 2,000 Esperantists from 51 countries attended this
year's event. There are over 100 items on this year's agenda,
including the inauguration of Beijing's Esperanto Woods. About
two million people worldwide speak Esperanto, which bills
itself as an "international language."
In 1986 the 71st Universal Esperanto Congress was also held
in Beijing.
