Beijing to Raise Downtown Car Parking Fees
2004/07/01
Beijing will raise car-parking fees in its downtown areas to
ease traffic congestion in the capital city. However, the city
will not impose restrictions on the private ownership of cars,
according to a June 15 report on www.chinadaily.com.cn that
cited a communications official.
Liu Xiaoming, deputy director of the Beijing Communication
Commission, said traffic jams have become a problem in this
city of more than 11 million people, and the city will not
adopt a laissez-faire attitude in addressing the issue.
The municipal government will take necessary measures to
regulate traffic volume in downtown areas using parking fees
and the availability of parking lots as tools, Liu said. And to
facilitate this, the city will construct large parking grounds
along the Fifth Ring Road around the city. Residents may choose
to park their cars there and take public transportation when
travelling within the city.
