People's Olympics Needs More Talents

2004/07/01

BOCOG announced at a press conference on the morning of June 17 that it planned to publicly recruit talented individuals from China and abroad to fill 62 positions.

The vacant positions include 7 deputy department directors, 21 project managers, 21 project assistants, 3 project clerks, 7 experts for Level-Four projects, 1 planner for Level-Five projects and 2 planners for Level-Six projects.

The 14 job vacancies of deputy directors and in Level-Four project experts will be available to Chinese citizens both at home and studying abroad. The remaining positions will be filled by Beijing residents.

BOCOG Vice-President Li Binghua said BOCOG would select the candidates based on principles of openness, transparency and fair play.

Applicants will undergo a foreign language examination of their writing skills, a general knowledge examination, a foreign-language oral test and a general test to gauge expertise and qualifications. BOCOG will eventually select the best-performing candidates through an examination and evaluation process.

Li said BOCOG has developed a flexible personnel recruiting system that is oriented toward the market. BOCOG first openly recruited 42 staff members from over 3,000 applicants from all sections of the society in 2002. Some of them have assumed pivotal responsibilities in their departments.

BOCOG has a 256-member staff, with an average age of 35. Among them are 139 people with master's degrees (54.5%), 11 with doctorates (4.2%) and 32 with experience of studying abroad (12.5%).

The BOCOG staff is expected to total about 4,000 by 2008 when the Beijing Olympic Games is held. In order to develop a strong, high-quality and well-structured contingent of talented employees for the Games, BOCOG has launched an "Olympic Talent" channel on its official website. From now on, BOCOG will mainly recruit its personnel from the talent reserve, in case any requirements for specialized talents arise.
