Brilliant Brazilian BBQ2004/07/01
By Daragh Moller "For visitors, or expat residents, feeling a little deprived of Western-style roasted meat, not normally a feature of Chinese cooking, the Lido Brazilian BBQ is a place to visit." The Lido Hotel presents a delicious and exciting Brazilian summer barbecue (BBQ) Friday and Saturday nights between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Set under the Lido Big Tent and surrounded by mouth-watering flavours and smells, here is a great opportunity to let your hair down and succumb to the romantic rhythms of a Brazilian party and sample some of the Lido's finest fare. The sizzling BBQ crackles with the juices of ox tongue, marinated lamb, fresh homemade sausage and bacon. The smell lingers in the air. The Big Tent is filled with the clatter of a busy Friday night at the Lido Brazilian BBQ: Latino music, dancers dancing the samba, cocktail shaking, lots of laughter and the busy flow of people in and out of the tent. On offer are a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails that can be ordered before you select your starter from the buffet. Choose from Mediterranean-style salads of olives, beans and selected greens complimented by fresh breads, South American olive oil and dressings. Lovingly devised by Executive Chef Max Grenard, the feast and its cuts of meat, marinades, fresh herbs, choice of vegetables and exotic concoctions are all expertly prepared by the Lido's astonishing number of chefs (85) that populate its kitchen's and afford an attention to detail that is easily spotted in great cuisine. Stars sparkle in the night sky and a cooling breeze moves through the tent as children run between the tables giving the Brazilian BBQ the feel of a beach party as much as a family affair. Next up, is the BBQ main dish. Over bright red burning coals, the skewered meat turns. The chef slices through the cuts of meat with a large sharp knife and the juices flow piquant and free across the plate. The chef recommends ox tongue that turns out smoky, succulent and beautifully tender. For visitors, or expat residents, feeling a little deprived of Western-style roasted meat, not normally a feature of Chinese cooking, the Lido Brazilian BBQ is a place to visit. An assortment of pepper-hot sauces and bean dishes accompany these meat dishes. These include Feijoada, Brazil's most famous export, a black bean and sausage stew thats rich and hearty and infused with plenty of garlic. Taking pause for thought, some idle chatter about the other diners, the music and the excellent cocktails precedes the delights of the dessert table. There is a selection of fresh fruit, a cheesecake with strawberries, a banana and custard pie and a delicious chocolate cake. Decaffeinated coffee and café lattes round off a perfectly delightful meal. The service was excellent. The Brazillian BBQ is situated in the Lido Big Tent in the hotel's Spring Garden and runs throughout the summer, every Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. |
