New Gold Barn

2004/07/01
By Hellen Zhou

The Gold Barn, a popular restaurant, bar and furniture store located northeast of the Germany Embassy on Sanlitun North Street, has opened a new branch only steps away from its first site.

The new Gold Barn is different from its elder sister. The owners of the Gold Barn are lovers of Chinese culture, so the original restaurant was decorated with antiques or traditional Chinese furniture. The new store mimics a 1930s Shanghai household. According to Ouyang Xiaoni, one of the owners, "We collected old furniture from Tianjin and Shanghai, which were, as you all know, frontiers for the absorption of western culture two centuries ago. Many expats resided there in early 20th century and used a blend of Eastern and Western ideas to build their houses and furnish them. This is where we got our 'Furniture Museum' ideas. We copied this style, using our collection." The old furniture, a phonograph, dresser and even dishes and chopsticks seem exactly as they might have been in 1930's Shanghai.

Those who have visited the original Gold Barn know that it looks more like a comfortable house than a restaurant, as does the new one. The first and second floors of the building cover 1,000 sq.m and will serve 100 diners. The space between tables allows diners to feel they are being served in their own dining rooms instead of a restaurant. On the second floor, you can see a small terrace with wood fence under the shadows of trees.

The Gold Barn serves authentic Sichuan dishes, perhaps because the owners are from Sichuan. The owners firmly believe that deliciousness is basic, so innovation and beautiful form should be achieved after good taste is guaranteed. This is important because at the Gold Barn everyone pays 100 yuan per meal exclusive of drinks and diners get what the chef chooses to serve. Generally, you will enjoy over ten dishes, however, the menu changes from time to time. If you like one or a few of the dishes very much, you can ask for more.
