Tribute Honours Yellow Emperor
2004/05/01
On April 4, an historical tribute by some 4,000 Chinese from
home and abroad paid homage in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, to
Xuanyuan Huangdi (the Yellow Emperor) on behalf of the more
than 1.3 billion Chinese across the globe.
The gathering took place outside the
legendary emperor's mausoleum, and was a sign of respect to the
ancestor of the Chinese nation.
This
year, for the first time, the sacrificial rites were broadcast
live by CCTV (China Central Television), Shanghai Oriental
Television, Hong Kong Phoenix Television and Shaanxi Television
to a worldwide audience.
The
Yellow Emperor was honoured as the ancestor who helped bring
Chinese civilization into being. Inventions attributed to him
include the cart, the boat, the bow and arrow, and Chinese
medicine. One of his imperial historians is believed to have
created the foundations of Chinese pictography.
