Holiday Celebrations for New Central Plaza Beijing

2004/05/31
By Ma Le

The Holiday Inn Central Plaza sparkles in the morning light. Just over two weeks old, this colossal edifice is the new boy on the block and likely to win many friends in the neighbourhood in the coming months. Just a stone's throw from the city's financial area, this 322-room hotel is located in the Guanganmen commercial and government area, just 40-minutes from the airport in south west Beijing's Xuan Wu District.

Out of the morning heat, the hotel foyer is cool and spacious and there is a gentle sound of flowing water. The interior is both simple and chic and has an authentic and natural feel to it that is both restful and inviting. A Piazza D'oro café tastefully furnishes one corner of the foyer space.

The area is new to many corporate ventures and relocated local and municipal government offices, a prospect the hotel must indeed welcome.

A brief tour of the hotel shows that it is impeccably designed and matches the functional comfort that world-travellers and business executives come to expect from top-class hotels. Of particular note are the executive options. These provide sizeable and very comfortable accommodation to the business traveller. The hotel is eager to point out that they also provide 24-hour IT support from Intertouch. Also offered are a business centre, wireless broadband, and limousine service that together provide a complete package for the busy executive. The Executive Club enables classic "working breakfasts" in the small conference facility located just next to the Executive Club kitchen.

And before setting out for the day or indeed at the days end, the hotel has superb health Club with gym and sauna facilities that are second to none as well as a magnificent lap pool. Qualified and experienced staff supervises state of the art exercise equipment as well as personalized training facilities. There is also an area specifically for aerobic exercise. Sports massage is available on request.

There are two dining facilities in the hotel: Salt & Pepper is a fusion restaurant that provides table and buffet service as well as an exciting open-kitchen feature. Zen is a new-concept Cantonese restaurant managed by Ernest Ip. The restaurant provides a range of dining facilities including intimate tables for two as well as Chinese-style private dining rooms that can accommodate 12 or more people. Zen has sister restaurants in Hong Kong, Shanghai and London and the food is promoted as simple and "zen-like" producing great flavours from simply used, fresh ingredients.

Michael Wu is the General Manager of Holiday Inn Central Plaza and is as impeccable, stylish and expensive as the hotel he manages. He has great vision for some of the hotel's really special qualities. For example, he's turning the hotel lobby lounge, the whimsically titled "See Thru" into a place with a seductive, sexy environment where diners will come to relax before heading out on the town or going up to bed. He says, "This place is going to be really cool, lit by candlelight, and kept alive with great sounds."

Michael also talks about Intertouch, the Information Technology support system that the hotel employs to make sure that all their guests have 24-hour trouble-shooting available to help meet that critical deadline. Intertouch is a global IT-support company that the hotel chain has used successfully for many years, so naturally he's very enthusiastic to be able to be of service to the many new corporate clients in the area, as well as the relocated government offices due to move in next door over the coming months.

With this in mind he talks about the magnificent meeting and banqueting facilities the Plaza provides. The main conference space is 640 sq ms and joined by eight other function rooms of varying size. The hotel provides qualified and professionally trained staff to help coordinate your conference and meeting room needs.
