Wanted: Cool Cats!

2004/04/01

While most Andrew Lloyd Webber fans are simply anxious to catch one of the shows in Beijing, 10 lucky locals have a chance of actually being part of it!

The British production company, The Really Useful Group, has confirmed it needs 10 extra 'cats' to play a role in the Beijing performances.

Since making the announcement, the switchboard of the show's local backer, the China Performing Arts Agency, has been red hot with would-be performers wanting to grab a share of the limelight and become a part of history.

The chosen performers must meet strict standards in singing, dancing, and even language skills. Basic dance training, acrobatic skills and a talent for improvisation are regarded as musts. And crucially, they must be good at imitating cats.

A total of 50 hopefuls will eventually be whittled down to the final top ten by April 14. From then on, the lucky 'cats' will begin an intensive training period with the rest of the cast ahead of the opening night.

The show's training director, Drew Vale, said: "We hope that we can train these 10 local cats to be as professional as all the other cats from London and Broadway. Making special clothes, shoes and hats suitable for every local cat is another important duty of the sponsors."

This will only be the second time local cats have been chosen to perform since the show debuted in 1981.
