Local Stores Enjoy Hot Sales of Gulf Books
2003/03/01
As tension mounts with the United States continuing threat
of war against Iraq, books about the Persian Gulf region, or
focusing on American and Iraqi military strength, have become
bestsellers in the Chinese capital.
At Xidan Books Building, Beijing's largest bookstore, a
special counter called Focus On The Gulf was opened to meet the
growing demand of readers. Located in a corner on the
building's ground floor, it sells 25 titles about the region.
Although limited in area, the counter has been crowded since
opening, with about 40 books sold every day.
A Gulf counter has also been opened at Xinhua Bookstore in
Wangfujing. Called Gulf and Peace, it was said by a counter
assistant to attract "military fans" and to have opened to cash
in on so-called Gulf fever. More than 30 new titles Baghdad
Under the War Clouds, Special Forces of the US Army, and Inside
Stories About the US Army.
