Safer Ham and Eggs Due to Herbal Additives

2003/03/01

Farms in Beijing are feeding pigs and fowl with forage that is safer than usual through being treated with traditional Chinese herbal additives, reported Beijing Youth Daily. Workers at Fengkehui Biological Science and Technology Company, Beijing's first herbal forage research and development firm, first grinds the herbs into powder then mixes them with conventional feed in carefully designed proportions. After filtering, purification and mixing processes, the herbal forage is fed to pigs, chickens and ducks.

The herbal forage is said to reduce inflammation and boost immunity to viruses among the pigs and fowl. Ingredients used include hawthorn, dried tangerine peel, red pepper, ginger and garlic. Elsewhere in the world, the most common forage additives include chemical stimulants and numerous antibiotics. Pork and chicken eggs resulting from the herbal forage can be bought in Beijing markets.
