Chew This: Mini Rubbish Bags Come With Your Gum
2002/12/01
The recent removal of more than 600,000 pieces of discarded
chewing gum in Tian'anmen Square has brought new measures that,
with public cooperation, will prevent the need for such
expensive clean-ups in the future. Visitors who buy gum from
the 50 vendors in the square will also be given five small bags
in which to dispose of it and its wrapping. Five thousand bags
have been issued to the vendors. After use by the public, they
should be placed in the square's litter bins.
About 1,000 cleaners armed with specialized solvents and
equipment spent 15 days removing the wads of gum after the
October national holiday. The new bags are an initiative by the
Tian'anmen Administration for Industry & Commerce.
