Coal-burning Boiler Conversions Slash Beijing's Air Pollutants
2002/12/01
Beijing residents are this winter expected to collectively
inhale 8,500 tons less sulfur dioxide and 4,300 tons less soot
than in previous years, due to the successful conversion to
clean energy of many thousands of coal-burning boilers, Beijing
Morning Post reported.
The municipality consumes about 27 million tons of coal each
year, a prime source of serious air pollution because it
produces black smoke, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide and
other pollutants. Converting the boilers to consume clean
energy is a major part of Beijing's air quality control
campaign. So far, a total of more than 44,000 tea-boilers and
large stoves have been retooled, while some 10,000 boilers in
Beijing's outer suburbs have also begun to use clean
energy.
