New English Test Takes Account of WTO Standards
2002/12/01
A new Test of Professional English (TOPE), developed by
US-based Educational Test Service (ETS), has been given trial
runs at Beijing Foreign Studies University and Beijing Language
and Culture University.
TOPE is designed to test the English proficiency of those
whose mother tongue is different. It includes speaking,
listening, reading and writing, employing the vocabularies most
frequently used in business and daily life. One thousand
applicants from colleges, universities, government
administrations and multinational companies have registered for
the test.
Educational experts say TOPE is useful as a human resources
tool, especially as many local enterprises, companies and
government administrations have to comply with the WTO's
language and other international standards.
