Successful 16th CPC National Congress

2002/12/01

The week-long 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) concluded on November 14 after the elections of the 16th CPC Central Committee and a new Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), and adoption of three resolutions.
The congress, the first convened by the Party in the new century, was of particular importance at a time when China is entering the third phase of its modernization program. Successful and inspiring, the congress was also of great historic significance in terms of development of the Party and State. The report of the 15th CPC Central Committee was a political declaration and a program of action for the Party in the new century.

The amendment to the Constitution of the Party established the thought of Chinese president Jiang Zemin's"Three Represents"as a guiding ideology together with Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and Deng Xiaoping Theory. Jiang said this reflected new requirements for Party-building in the new situation.

This year's congress elected a new CPC Central Committee, thus ensuring a smooth succession in the Party's central leadership. Also elected was a new Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. Jiang said these elections were of great historic significance and will inspire the whole Party and Chinese people of all ethnic groups to keep pace with the times, and push forward the great cause of building socialism with Chinese characteristics.

During the congress period, many foreign political parties and organizations, and various non-Communist entities and personalities in China sent their congratulations. The presidium of the congress expressed heartfelt gratitude for Commerce; the central committees of non-Communist parties; and figures with no party affiliation.
