Modern Anti-ice Agents Will Rid City Streets of Snow
2002/12/01
A new anti-ice agent adopted by Beijing Municipal Government
will see the end of salt as the method of clearing city roads
of ice and snow. Salt is being replaced by 14 anti-ice agents
which, unlike salt, will not cause damage to plants, crops and
buildings.
Trials of the new environmentally-friendly agents, carried
out in parts of Beijing since 2000, confirmed that they can
melt snow faster than salt and dissolve more quickly in water.
Although more expensive than salt, they do not harm plants and
their corrosive effect on buildings is relatively minor.
Beijing formerly needed about 600 tons of diluted salt to clear
the city's main streets and highways after a heavy
snowfall.
